John Oliver discusses student personal debt, which is awful, as nicely as for-financial gain colleges, who are awfully excellent at inflicting personal debt upon us.

  12. Wouldn't it just make more sense to give people the money directly, than all these loans to wealthy institutions that give squat in return?

I mean, at least they'd provide a temporary boost to the local economy and they, themselves, would have something to show for it.

  13. I'd send my kids to go to a university in Europe before I let them drown in student loan debt in the US…

For example: in Germany public universities are publicly funded, usually have degree programs in English, accept Foreign students, and usually offer very discounted housing and meal plans. Most German students don't need to work to pay for school, don't graduate with student debt, and don't have to worry about diploma mills or for-profit parasites like their American counterparts.

They also clearly have embraced educating their population as a responsibility of society and have structured their Government to address that responsibility…

  14. I don't have hope for college ever being affordable for me. Even cheaper colleges are still going to be a strain. My parents never saved anything for me nor can they help me now. I was going to go to this summer but I was let go from my job in January and still unemployed so I don't know what I'm going to do. I don't want to be living at home though I'm only 19 but I want to leave.

  16. Student loan debt is not a horrible idea if the person can manage the money responsibly. It's only terrible if person can't pay the loan back. My advice to all those anthropology, music, psychology or other liberal arts major is that get a part time job or change you your major. The school district (MPUSD) where I live is looking for teacher with math or any science degrees with starting salary of $43000.00. They are looking as far as Oregon to Louisiana to recruit teachers. So don't whine about the job market but study the job market and you will probably get a good paying job. Then you can pay the loan off little bit at a time.

  23. I spent two semesters at Penn State University (18,000) and a semester at Community College (About 6,000)

The first semester at Penn State, I hated my field but was told to shut up and keep going by my friends and family because we'd spent an ungodly amount of money already. When I finally managed to flunk out I ended up at Community College to get a job in Air Traffic Control. At the end of the first semester I had a bit of a breakdown and was told by my proctors and teachers to seek a psychiatric evaluation. It turned out I have a severe anxiety disorder that makes me unfit for service in the Air Traffic Control industry (understandably so) and was just never diagnosed. In fact, I'd been having panic attacks for my entire life and never had even a fraction of an idea I was having them because I was never told what a panic attack actually felt like. Then I went to some psychiatric offices and they told me "This is what a panic attack is." to which I, unfortunately, responded with "I have one of those at least 3 times a week.

Since then I've been waiting to get into a new school (11,000 for 1 year, but a 1 year program) where I'll be learning to work in computer repair and basic networking, allowing me to get a job in an office building or as a repair representative. If I get hired. so naturally this is…a terrifying endeavor for me. I have no idea what to think or do with that kind of debt considering I've never even seen that much money in one place. And yet that's couch money to some of these other schools.

  27. I think it is ridiculous how many people are getting into SO much debt for Undergraduate Schools, not to mention the fact that we are basically paying our government to provide them with a more educated work force! That's like our President saying we are going to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it…Which actually happened… Can't be certain, but I think there's a pattern there.
