Civil Forfeiture: Past Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

Did you know law enforcement can just get your things if they suspect it is concerned in a criminal offense? They can!
It’s a shady method referred to as “civil asset forfeiture,” and it would make for a bizarre episode of Regulation and Buy.

  2. This is awful. I had no idea a so-called "modern" democratic country would have such prehistoric "laws"!

And Kangaroo courts are probably more legitimate than these!

  3. I wouldn't be surprised if the cops that abuse this are also the overreacting cops that shoot first and ask questions later. that would explain why they get away with it: they earn the profits

  5. America pays lip service to "freedom" at the drop of a hat but Americans haven't been free since the turn of the 21st century.

  9. I'm baffled. John did talk about the great american ability of optimism and there you certainly need it. The police can legally steal your stuff and it's not even a big thing when you hear the interviewed cop in the clip. In germany there are demonstrations against arbitrary use of power by the police but we demonstrate against racial profiling and the resulting unfair treatment of ethnical groups. But you don't get robbed (or even shot) without any reasons or prosecution.

  16. An absolutely disgusting and outrageous practice, and for a non-U.S. citizen just flabbergasting.

(without subtracting any of the disgust and outrage, and from the absurdity of charges against property: 64 000+ pounds of shark fins should have landed the 'owner' in front of the judge, and in jail)

  21. Scum like that make it impossible for the police who are on the job because they actually want to help people and maintain order to actually make any sort of a difference. Nowadays so many people see the police uniform and automatically assume the person wearing it is corrupt and wants to screw them over for the evulz.

And don't give me that shit about "All cops are pigs" or "They don't give a shit about XXX race". There's people from every race, every background, and every walk of life out there in the American police force. I've got family that work or have worked in the police force, and aside from one uncle who's a douche bag, they're good people.

  22. So hold on a minute now,if their claim is that they believe said property will be used for "criminal" activity, then why haven't they seized and shut down every single weapons manufacturing facility in the US?
